A panel in a VR classroom

split studio

At Arizona State University, the College of Global Futures offers course with Virtual Reality experiences. These experiences are created by SPLIT Studio, a student-powered team at EdPlus. There are multiple experiences to choose from; you can explore early cities or investigate ice sheets in the Arctic.

For this project, I was responsible for designing the UI that is featured throughout the experience. I had to develop both a system for students and instructors and a light and dark UI to account for the changes in the environment. Along with the UI, I was in charge of making the visual graphics as well as some micro animations.

designing for virtual reality

When designing user interfaces for a Virtual Reality environment, it is crucial to prioritize accessibility. The UI often follows the user, so making it adaptable to different environments  is a must. Certain opacities must be considered to allow readability and also balance within the environment.

With this specific project, there was both a student and instructor UI, with the instructor driving the experience. When creating the poll user flow, we had to consider what information was available to the student vs. instructor, and where in the interface that information would live. Since Virtual Reality interfaces don't live in one dimension, it takes much more deliberation to create the most effective solution.
